The sustainability of high-rise buildings

Recently the tragedy of a fire at a high-rise building in Hong Kong remembered the environmental impacts of these buildings. As a result, here we invite the reading of the following paper, summing up environmental impacts and mitigation possibilities.   Ali, M. & Armstrong, P. (2008). Overview of sustainable design factors in high-rise buildings. Journal of Architectural Engineering.   The use of water and different materials are proposals. Our opinion is that at least these buildings should include green spaces, even if just a small space for a plant near a window. At the same time, we could also ask about the altitude limits that might exist for people to live at those spaces. There should be limits? Can these structures be properly adapted to have a few vertical gardens? Are these questions relevant for any building? Here simple questions we can imagine.   Enjoy.
